Pike fly – tying instructions

 In Fly Tying

After reading the great introductive post from Stefaan (thelonesomepiker.blogspot.com), I gave it a try using some of the material he presented to tie big pike fly.

To tie the following fly I used:

– A piece of tube large size with liner tube (about 5-6 cm length)

– Black thread size 6/0

– Green Rabbit Zonker strip about 10 – 12 cm long for the tail and body

– Orange Marabou feather and Red Ostrich feather for the hackle/head

– Eumer Red Monster Conehead

To fix it properly, I added drops of superglue on tying points.

I am pretty happy with the result even if the rabbit strip does not offer the same quality as Finn Raccoon, I am pretty hurry to test it.

If by chance you know a good retailer for Finn Raccoon  Zonker strip on the internet, I am interested as I have not found any yet.

Nice fly Bruce, but since you have tied it on a tube (so the hook will be further to the end), I think that your zonker strip will wrap around the hook. You can avoid this by tying in some bucktail or a mono loop, before you make the rest of the body. This way the zonker will slide along the bucktail or loop when you cast it.

I will let you know when I find raccoon (I’m looking for it too, but it usually is too expensive in these parts of Europe).

Thanks for the advice! , I will check if I can fix it as it is to avoid this problem. The tail is not very log on this one so I wil be able to find a way to get the tail swimming.

Yep raccoon is not so easy to find :).
